American quarterback Troy Smith, born on July 20, 1984, played professionally in the National Football League (NFL).

He represented the Ohio State Buckeyes in college football, receiving first-team All-America recognition and the Heisman Trophy in 2006.

In addition to playing for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks, and the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, he was chosen by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. After spending his NFL career in the NFL, he played two seasons in the CFL before quitting football in 2014.

On December 9 of that year, Smith received the Heisman Memorial Trophy. He outperformed Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn and Arkansas sophomore running back Darren McFadden.

Why did Troy Smith win the Heisman?

After guiding the Buckeyes to an unbeaten regular season in 2006, Troy Smith became Ohio State’s seventh Heisman champion. He became the sixth Buckeye to win the Heisman Trophy, following Les Horvath (1944), Vic Janowicz (1950), Howard Cassady (1955), Archie Griffin (1974–1975), and Eddie George (1995).
