West Virginia contacted Smith, and he accepted the last scholarship offered in Ohio State’s football recruiting class. Smith was a scat back and returner who started the first game of the season against Washington. He finished with 14 running yards and 83 return yards, and scouts from the NFL took notice of his athleticism. Zwick took over as the starting after he became injured midway through the season, winning four of the next five games before getting suspended for breaking an unnamed team rule.
