Before tonight’s game against Pontypool RFC, when Watkins’ previous team kicks off their Premiership campaign, there will be a moment of silence.

Watkins, sometimes referred to as “Dai” by many, won the Welsh Championship in 1961 during his first season at Newport and participated in the historic triumph over New Zealand in 1963.

The club received the Freedom of the City of Newport on the 50th anniversary of the victory because Watkins’ Newport was the only team to defeat the All Blacks during their 1963 trip.
