Jones currently serves as head coach at Arkansas State University.

The Michigan native played college football for the FSU Bulldogs at Ferris State University, as a running back, wide receiver, cornerback, from 1987 to 1989.

He first began his coaching career in 1990, as an intern for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL), under head coach Ray Perkins.

In 1993, he joined the Rutgers as a graduate assistant, and later served as offensive coordinator at Wilkes University, leading the team to the Division III playoffs.

In 1995, he returned Ferris State as a running back coach and later as an offensive coordinator.

Jones has additionally coached Central Michigan (from 1999 to 2004, and 2010 to 2012), West Virginia, Cincinnati, Tennessee, and Alabama.
