A Chicagoan and sailor named Bill Pinkney created history and inspired many people 31 years ago with his voyage around the world.
Capt. Pinkney passed away on Thursday, we learnt. He was 87. Pinkney was sailing alone in 1992, and hundreds of kids followed his every nautical mile in fascination.

Using Cape Horn in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in southern Chile and Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Chicago native Pinkney made history by being the first African American to sail solo around the globe. It was a feat of bravery and perseverance.

In addition, Pinkney served as the Johnson Products Company’s director of marketing before taking up the position of director of marketing for the Chicago Department of Human Services in 1980, according to the History Makers.

Bill Pinkney has a daughter called Angela Walton. For a while, Mr. Pinkney oversaw the replica’s use for sail training and instruction as its captain. In addition, he developed a curriculum for middle school students on the African slave trade and led a group of teachers and students aboard an 85-foot ketch to retrace the Middle Passage route that slave ships used to travel from Africa to the Americas.
