The machine learning program AM was developed by Lenat, who received the biennial IJCAI Computers and Thought Award in 1976. With his AM and Eurisko programs, he has worked on (symbolic, rather than statistical) machine learning, knowledge representation, “cognitive economy,” blackboard systems, and what he coined in 1984 “ontological engineering” (with his Cyc program at MCC and, since 1994, at Cycorp).

He has also participated in a variety of initiatives for the US government, military, intelligence, and scientific institutions, including combat simulations. He critiqued traditional random-mutation Darwinism in a paper that was released in 1980.
