He was a tight end at Ursinus College. Mullen worked as a wide receivers coach at Wagner from 1994 to 1995. He was a wide receivers coach at Columbia from 1996 to 1997 and a general assistant coach at Syracuse in 1998.

Dan Mullen was a general assistant coach at Notre Dame from 1999 to 2000 and a quarterbacks coach at Bowling Green from 2001 to 2002.

He was the quarterbacks coach at Utah from 2003 to 2004, then the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida from 2005 to 2008.
