Haigh worked as an assistant editor on films including Gladiator and Black Hawk Down before making his directorial debut with the short film Oil,

Greek Pete, his first feature-length film, premiered at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in 2009. Weekend, Haigh’s second film, about a 48-hour relationship between two men, premiered on March 11, 2011 at the SXSW Film Festival, where it earned the Audience Award for Emerging Visions.

The film played at numerous other festivals across the world and went on to win numerous prizes, including the Grand Jury Award for Outstanding International Narrative Feature at L.A. Outfest and the London Film Critics’ Circle award for Breakthrough British Filmmaker.

45 Years, Haigh’s next film, screened as part of the main competition at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. Charlotte Rampling was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the film.

In October 2016, Haigh was confirmed as the writer-director of The North Water, a mini-series based on Ian McGuire’s novel of the same name. Filming began in the summer of 2018. In 2021, it aired on BBC Two from July 15 to August 12.
