According to the Dutch football association (KNVB), former Netherlands goalkeeper Jan Jongbloed, who participated in two World Cup finals, passed away on Thursday at the age of 82 following a protracted illness.

The “Oranje” golden age of the 1970s included Jongbloed, who established a reputation for being a goalie who transcended his locality.
They advanced to the World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978 under the direction of Johan Cruyff, but occasionally fell to the hosts, West Germany, and Argentina.

For the 1974 World Cup after Jan van Beveren withdrew, national coach Rinus Michels called Jongbloed back, and he played regularly for the following four years, once going 683 minutes without giving up a goal.

On August 31, 2023, Jongbloed passed away at the age of 82. Sadly, his cause of death has not been made public. He was most famously Bert Jacobs’ assistant at Vitesse. In 1989, Vitesse was elevated to the Eredivisie under their direction, and the following year, the team was eligible to compete in Europe. In collaboration with Jongbloed’s family, Vitesse intends to pay tribute to him during their match against AZ on Sunday.
