Brandt first gained experience in scouting while working part-time for the Los Angeles Rams after graduating from the University of Wisconsin. When the San Francisco 49ers folded in 1960, Brandt moved to Dallas to take a job as the team’s lead talent scout with the Cowboys, where he worked until 1958 when he was given his first full-time opportunity.
