Gil Brandt son: Meet Huner Brandt

Gil Brandt passed away. He was a member of the three who helped the Dallas Cowboys become “America’s Team” in the 1970s, but was overshadowed by coach Tom Landry and general manager Tex Schramm. He was 91.

Brandt served as the player personnel director alongside the media-savvy Schramm and the austere Landry. Brandt had to wait nearly 30 years longer to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

By the time Brandt was honored as a contributor, it was as much for his ability to stay active in the NFL by adjusting to the social media era as it was for the advancement the Cowboys made in the draft process with computers in the early 1960s. In 2019, Brandt ultimately moved to Canton, Ohio, where he had previously lived with Landry and Schramm (1990) and always claimed he never felt overshadowed.

Sara, Brandt’s wife, and their two sons, Hunter and Brig, are still alive. On the recommendation of Elroy Hirsch, Brandt was hired as a part-time scout for the Los Angeles Rams while also working as a photographer who specialized in newborn newborns. The San Francisco 49ers employed him as a full-time scout in 1958.
