Gil Brandt, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who helped transform the Dallas Cowboys from an expansion franchise to “America’s Team,” died on Thursday at the age of 91. He was a pioneer in the NFL’s analytics era.

From the Cowboys’ entry into the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1960 until May 1989, when Jones took over as owner and general manager, Brandt served as the team’s vice president of player personnel.

By using computers and statistics to assess players physically and psychologically, Brandt was a modern scouting pioneer that other teams imitated. Nine of the players he signed or selected were later inducted into the Hall of Fame. Bob Lilly, a defensive lineman, was his first pick in 1960.
