Gabonese political leader Ali Bongo had won the 2023 elections by 64.27%, which led to mass protests around the country. However, contrary electoral reports state that Bongo had a little under two-third of the majority votes.

The military had announced a coup d’etat on August 30, 2023, following the result of the election, placing Bongo under house arrest and charging him for high treason.

Bongo is the son of the former President of Gabon, Omar Bongo, and had assumed office after his father’s death.

In 2009, Bongo ran for the presidency of Gabon following the death of his father. He had won the election amidst controversy and allegations of rigging.
In 2018, Ali Bongo suffered a stroke while abroad, leading to increased concerns about his health and ability to rule.
In 2016, Ali Bongo was re-elected for a second term as president in an election that was also marred by allegations of irregularities and protests.
In 2023, Bongo contested again for presidency, but was ousted by the military, following the results of the Gabonese general election.
