With 76 tackles and seven sacks as a senior, Basham topped Northside High School in Roanoke, Virginia. He committed to play college football in 2016 for West Forrest University’s Demon Deacons.

At West Forrest University, Basham redshirted his freshman season, but he started each of the team’s 13 games in 2016. He made 24 tackles as a sophomore. He also had 64 tackles and 4.5 sacks by the time his junior season came to an end. He received a spot on the First Team All-ACC honors in 2019.
