Mary Theisen-Lappen’s Coaching Odyssey: Having been an integral part of UW-Oshkosh’s track & field program since the 2015-16 season, Mary Theisen-Lappen held the esteemed position of primary throws coach. However, news of her resignation from the coaching role at UW-Oshkosh has surfaced, with her departure set to take effect on October 1.

A Noteworthy Coaching Stint: Throughout her illustrious career, Theisen-Lappen held the role of assistant coach for all but one of her six seasons at UW-Oshkosh. In the 2016-17 campaign, she took the reins as the interim head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. Her journey as the Titans’ full-time throws coach officially began in the 2017-18 season.

A Legacy of Accomplishments: Theisen-Lappen’s coaching prowess has translated into remarkable achievements for the UW-Oshkosh track & field program. Under her guidance, student-athletes excelled in the throwing events, capturing two national titles, achieving 14 All-America performances, and clinching five conference championships. Notably, her impact extended beyond throws, as she led athletes to five additional All-America accolades and six conference titles during her tenure as head coach.

Championing Excellence: Among Theisen-Lappen’s standout achievements was her role in guiding UW-Oshkosh’s Sydney Thompson to NCAA Division III outdoor titles in both discus and shot put in 2021. Theisen-Lappen’s meticulous instruction contributed significantly to Thompson’s victories, underscoring her ability to nurture and hone athletic talent.

A Trail of Success: Theisen-Lappen’s coaching prowess continued to shine in the 2021 Division III outdoor championships, where she guided three other Titans—Jack Flynn, Morgan Florek, and Jackson Sheckler—to All-America performances in discus and shot put events. UW-Oshkosh’s outstanding performance led to a third-place finish in the men’s team standings and a commendable seventh place in the women’s category at the national outdoor meet.

A Legacy of Transformation: Thompson’s victories in discus and shot put, along with Flynn’s win in discus, were a testament to Theisen-Lappen’s impact, showcased at the 2021 WIAC outdoor championships. The Titans secured a noteworthy third place in the men’s team standings and a respectable fourth place in the women’s division at the league outdoor meet.

Theisen-Lappen’s Journey to Excellence: Mary Theisen-Lappen’s journey to coaching excellence is complemented by her own athletic achievements. A graduate of Eau Claire Regis High School, she embarked on her collegiate journey at Winona State University (Minn.), amassing five All-America awards, including a first-place finish in the discus at the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship.

A Legacy of Learning and Leadership: Continuing her academic pursuits, Theisen-Lappen transferred to Indiana State University, earning three NCAA Division I All-America citations during the 2014 season. She concluded her collegiate career with a commendable ninth-place finish in the shot put at the USA Outdoor Championship.

With a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from Indiana State University in 2014 and a master’s degree in Education Counseling Psychology, emphasizing Positive Coaching & Athletic Leadership, from the University of Missouri in 2019, Mary Theisen-Lappen’s journey continues to inspire as she leaves an indelible mark on the world of athletics.
