William Nicholas Guy Hitchon, popularly known as Nick Hitchon, was a well-known person who was renowned for his quiet and modest demeanor as well as his voracious curiosity about life. He was born on October 22, 1957, hence he was always one year younger than the Seven Up! episodes he featured in. Nick was born into a farming family and is a native of a tiny farm in the village of Arncliffe in the Yorkshire Dales.

He had a strong desire to learn about the moon and the stars, which inspired him to enroll in Merton College, Oxford, to study physics. Nick was just 19 years old and fully engrossed in his post-graduate studies at the time 21 Up was being filmed.
