Whoever gets the fève after the cake is cut receives a prize. The King cake custom has been connected to the Epiphany since the 19th century.

The three kings, also known as the Magi in the Bible as Melchior, Balthazar, and Gaspard, visited Jesus twelve days after his birth and brought him presents. They are the inspiration for the name of the Three Kings cake.
