The holiday of Epiphany is often associated with king cakes, commonly referred to as three king’s cakes. Its composition and form are flexible, but the majority of the time a fève is concealed inside, like a figure that is frequently claimed to depict the Christ Child.

Upon cake cutting, a prize is awarded to the person who receives the fève. The King cake ritual has been connected to the Epiphany since the 19th century.
Melchior, Balthazar, and Gaspard, the three kings of the Bible, who visited Jesus twelve days after his birth to present him with presents, are also known as the source of the cake’s name.
