A confection called a “king cake,” also referred to as a “three kings cake,” is connected to Epiphany in various cultures. Although its composition and appearance might vary, a fève, such as a figure that is sometimes claimed to depict the Christ Child, is typically concealed inside.

Whoever gets the fève wins a prize after the cake is cut. The custom of the King cake has been connected to the Epiphany since the 19th century.

The three kings, also known as the Magi in the Bible as Melchior, Balthazar, and Gaspard, came to Jesus twelve days after his birth to present him with gifts, giving rise to the name “Three Kings” cake.

What is inside a king cake?

Every king cake contains a trinket — often a small figurine in the shape of a baby — which plays a crucial part in the celebration of the holiday that inspired this pastry.

Whoever finds the trinket in their slice of cake gets to be the “king” for a day.
