Prior to the onset of World War II, Doss worked as a joiner at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia.
On April 1, 1942, at Camp Lee, Virginia, he chose military service over a deferral because of his shipyard work.
Doss had intended to continue his carpentry trade after the war, but serious injury to his left arm prevented him from doing so.
