Michael Dunlop Parents: Meet Robert Dunlop, Louise Dunlop

Michael Dunlop is a professional motorcycle racer from Northern Ireland. He is the son of Robert Dunlop and Louise Dunlop.

His father was also a motorcycle racer. He won the Macau Grand Prix in 1989 on a Honda 500.

Robert Dunlop, his father died on May 15, 2008, after suffering severe chest injuries in a crash during a practise session at the North West 200.

The deadly collision occurred during qualifying for the 250 cc class as the riders neared the Mather’s Cross section of the track.

When his motorcycle’s engine seized, he accidentally pressed the front brake, which was located next to the clutch on his specially built bike, and was catapulted over the handlebars at roughly 155 mph (250 km/h).

Robert Dunlop was transferred to Coleraine’s Causeway Hospital before succumbing to his injuries shortly after 22:00 local time. Michael went on to win the race and dedicated it to his father.

His funeral was held on May 18, 2008, at Garryduff Presbyterian Church in Ballymoney, his hometown. Dunlop was buried with his brother, Joey.
