Cutugno started out as a drummer, and at the age of 19, he formed his first band, Toto e i Tati. Later, he co-founded the disco band Albatros with Lino Losito and Mario Limongelli.

In March 2019, a group of Ukrainian lawmakers attempted to prevent Cutugno from performing in Kyiv by writing an open letter to the head of the country’s security services, Vasyl Hrytsak, requesting that the singer be barred from entering Ukrainian territory, labeling him a “Russian war supporter in Ukraine.”
