He began racing BMX bicycles at the age of three and later moved on to karting, where he won the World Karting Association title. He has competed in almost 180 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races and has two top-ten finishes.

McDowell appeared in 93 NASCAR Xfinity Series races, finishing in the top ten 19 times and winning two poles. He has also raced in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the Champ Car series.

McDowell won the 2004 Star Mazda Championship. He was named the 2003 Star Mazda Championship Rookie of the Year and the 2007 ARCA Re/MAX Series Rookie of the Year.
