Prior to becoming MLS commissioner, Garber spent his entire career in the sports industry, working in marketing, events, broadcasting, and league administration. Garber spent 16 years in the National Football League before joining MLS.

During his tenure, MLS grew from 10 to 30 teams and achieved attendance and broadcast income records. Garber has been named one of the sports industry’s most powerful CEOs by SportsBusiness Journal every year since 2005. In 2018, he was ranked 16th on the list. Garber was voted to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2016, but his induction was postponed until 2018.
