When she was five years old, the two-time women’s strawweight champion started training in martial arts. She received taekwondo instruction, and at the young age of nine, she rapidly attained her junior black belt.

She continued to train in both BJJ and karate after that. She began learning kickboxing and mixed martial arts while still in high school under the tutelage of Duke Roufus at Roufusport. She also wrestled for Milwaukee High School of the Arts during her final year.
