Abdulla Aboobacker won the bronze medal in the men’s triple jump event at the Montreuil International Meeting 2023 athletics meeting in France on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Abdulla Aboobacker, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, registered a season-best leap of 16.80m at the Stade des Grands Pêchers. The Indian triple jumper’s personal best is 17.19m, achieved last year in Bhubaneshwar.

Praveen Chithravel holds the men’s triple jump national record with a 17.37m leap in Cuba earlier this year.

Abdulla Aboobacker registered a 16.42m jump on the first attempt and fouled in the next two before registering his bronze-winning effort. The Indian chose to skip his last two jumps.

Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso, a two-time world championships medallist and a Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze winner, claimed the gold medal at Montreuil with an effort of 17.29m. Algeria’s Yasser Triki bagged the silver with a leap of 17.01m.

Frenchman Jonathan Seremes was fourth with 16.56m and three-time Olympian Benjamin Compaoré of France was fifth with 16.51m.

Two-time Olympian Alexis Copello of Azerbaijan, a world championships bronze medallist, was sixth with a best effort of 16.09m. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Ben Williams of Great Britain did not register a valid jump in his four attempts.

The Montreuil International Meeting is a World Athletics Continental Tour silver-label event.

Abdulla Aboobacker will be in action next at the Florence Diamond League on Friday.

At the Papaflessia Athletics Meeting in Kalamata, Greece, meanwhile, Karthik Unnikrishnan won the bronze medal in the men’s triple jump with a best effort of 16.05m.

At the Ethnikou Stadiou, Dimitrios Tsiamis of Greece won the gold medal with a 16.06m leap in the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger event. Two-time Olympian Levon Aghasyan of Armenia bagged silver, also with a 16.06m leap.
