Garland won a special Oscar in 1940 for her excellent work as a young actress on the big screen, especially her portrayal as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Not the version heard in the movie, her 1939 Decca recording of “Over the Rainbow” became her signature song and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard charts. The song also made her popular with the gay community, who came to associate Dorothy as well as the song.
