Frances Ethel Gumm, better known by her stage name Judy Garland, was an American singer and actress who was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on June 10, 1922, and died in London, England, on June 22, 1969. Her exceptional talent and vulnerabilities made her one of the most enduringly popular Hollywood icons of the 20th century.

Frances Gumm, who made her stage debut on December 26, 1924, at the age of 2 1/2, was the daughter of former vaudevillians Frank Gumm and Ethel Gumm, who ran the New Grand Theatre in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

She received her first stellar review from the entertainment news magazine Variety in 1932, when she was a 10-year-old singing sensation, and two years later, at the comedian George Jessel’s urging, she took the last name Garland.

Despite having a 24-year age difference, Garland and Minnelli were more like sisters, with Minnelli frequently taking on the role of caregiver and managing the household while also keeping her mother’s medications hidden.
