American aerospace engineer, test pilot, USAF officer, and NASA astronaut Karol J. Bobko (December 23, 1937 – August 17, 2023) served in both the USAF and NASA. The first US Air Force Academy alumnus to travel to space was Bobko.
After the Manned Orbital Laboratory (MOL) program was scrapped in September 1969, Bobko joined NASA Astronaut Group 7.

He was a member of the crew for the wildly successful 56-day ground simulation of the Skylab mission known as the Skylab Medical Experiment Altitude Test (SMEAT), which allowed crew members to gather baseline data for medical experiments and assess tools, operations, and procedures. Bobko was the head astronaut in the test and checkout team at Kennedy Space Center in advance of the maiden flight of Columbia (STS-1).
