Famous astronaut Karol Bobko was born in New York City, New York, on December 23, 1937. Karol is also well known for being an astronaut who participated in the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, a mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1985, and a mission for the United States Department of Defense in 1985.

Additionally, he was the first pilot to successfully complete a mission on the Space Shuttle Challenger, which was doomed to failure, in 1983. American origins can be traced back to Karol. He was a Colonel in the American Air Force, just like his fellow astronaut James Irwin.

Bobko led the test and checkout team at the Kennedy Space Center in the run-up to the first launch of Columbia (STS-1).
