Gary Young was an American musician and music producer best known as the founding drummer of the indie rock band Pavement from 1989 to 1993.

He was in the punk band The Fall of Christianity with Brian Thalken of The Authorities early in the decade.

In 2023, he starred in Louder Than You Think, a documentary on his own life and career directed by Jed I. Rosenberg.

On March 13, 2023, the film had its global premiere at South by Southwest, where it gained critical acclaim, winning the “Audience Award”: Alan French of Sunshine State Cinempex called it “illuminating and nostalgic,” and Serena Seghedoni of Loud and Clear Reviews called it “compelling.”

Young was fired from Pavement in 1993 due to conflicts with Malkmus and the rest of the band. He reunited with the band to play two shows in 2010.

Why did Gary Young leave Pavement?

Young left the group in 1993 after a tour of Japan, during which his drinking had become a bigger problem.

He went on to record several albums and got sober in the late-’90s. A documentary about him, Louder Than You Think, had its world premiere at SXSW this year.
