An accomplished sprint freestyle swimmer from Australia named John Devitt competed in a number of competitions. He took part in the Summer Olympics in 1960 and placed first in the 100-meter freestyle.

In the 4200-meter freestyle relay at the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Devitt also took home a gold medal. Additionally, he received a number of honors and prizes.

John was honored by being in to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979. In the same way, in 1986, he was admitted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
