Australian sprint freestyle swimmer John Thomas Devitt, who competed in the 1950s and 1960s, won the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960. Devitt passed away on August 17, 2023. Although the timekeepers recorded a slower time for him than the American who won the silver medal, Lance Larson, he was given the gold medal under questionable circumstances. Devitt retired and started working for Speedo after returning to Australia. He started as a salesperson and worked his way up to manager of the European and then International sections. He teamed up with Terry Gathercole in 1979 to launch their own business selling aquatic equipment.
