Australian sprint freestyle swimmer John Devitt was well-known and competed in a variety of competitions. In the 100-meter freestyle, he captured the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in 1960.

The 4200-meter freestyle relay at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne earned Devitt a gold medal as well. He also received numerous awards, which was another honor.

The International Swimming Hall of Fame accepted John in 1979. The Sport Australia Hall of Fame also recognized him in 1986, when he was inducted.
