John Devitt, an Australian swimmer who won gold medals in the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and Rome and established four personal world records, has passed away.

In the 100-meter freestyle event in Rome, Devitt captured his lone Olympic gold medal. In addition, he competed in the 4-x-200 Australian freestyle relay team that won gold at the Melbourne Games four years earlier.

Additionally, he took home a silver in the 100 freestyle at Melbourne and a bronze in Rome with the Australian 4-x-200 relay squad.

Also in 1958, Devitt took home three gold medals from the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales.
Later, he worked with the Australian Olympic Committee as an executive and contributed to Sydney’s success in securing the bid to host the 2000 Summer Olympics.
