His father was an investment banker. Chandor grew up in Bernards Township, New Jersey, in the Basking Ridge neighbourhood.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1996 from The College of Wooster after graduating from Ridge High School in Bernards Township in 1992.

J.C. Chandor  gained recognition for his debut feature film “Margin Call” (2011), which explored the financial crisis of 2008. The film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and was nominated for a Golden Bear at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival.

Margin Call received four Independent Spirit Award nominations, winning two of them: Best First Feature and the Robert Altman Award for Best Cast.

In addition, Chandor was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 2014, Chandor directed Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain in A Most Violent Year, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Independent Spirit Award.

Chandor runs the production company CounterNarrative Films with producers Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb in New York City. They have dozens of projects in various stages of development for film and television.
