Is Former Finnish PM Alexander Stubb Running for president?

Former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb announced on Wednesday, August 16 2023,  that he will be a candidate in Finland’s presidential election due in January of 2024.

His announcement came after incumbent premier Petteri Orpo on Sunday, August 13 2023, asked Stubb to become the National Coalition party’s candidate.

“In this geopolitical situation the answer is unequivocal: when the fatherland calls, then we go,” Stubb told reporters.

Alexander Stubb, who is now a professor and the director of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, held a number of ministerial positions before becoming Prime Minister in 2014 and 2015.

He was appointed as the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland in 2008 and held the position until 2011. Alexander Stubb also held the position of Minister of Finance in Finland from 2015 to 2016.

He was appointed as the Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade in 2011 and served until 2014. Former Finnish foreign minister Pekka Haavisto, scholar Mika Aaltola, and Bank of Finland governor Olli Rehn are among those who have declared their candidacy for the presidential election.
