Who Is Mohamed Bazoum?

Mohamed Bazoum is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Niger, who also served as the 10th president of Niger from 2021 to 2023.

Bazoum was born on January 1, 1960, in Bilabrine, N’guigmi Cercle, French Niger, and had emerged president in 2021, after a failed coup d’état attempt.

In 2023, Bazoum was forcefully removed from power, following a Nigerien coup d’état, “by members of the presidential guard and the armed forces led by Abdourahamane Tchiani.”

Bazoum was replaced immediately by a military junta known as “the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland”, also led by General Tchiani. Bazoum had reportedly been detained in the presidential palace, together with his wife, Hadiza, and son, Salem.

In the light of these, the African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had condemned the coup, and given the military an ultimatum to restore Bazoum back to power.

In August 2023, the junta announced that Bazoum will be facing prosecution for “high treason” and “undermining the country’s security.”
