Doherty focused on politics and public service after giving up soccer in 2003. From 2007 to 2011, he served as a representative of Dublin Central in the Irish parliament. When he was in office, Doherty was renowned for his dedication to social justice concerns, such as workers’ rights and affordable housing.

Doherty returned to the soccer scene in 2011, but this time as a coach. From 2016 to 2020, he was in charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Nya-Rose Doherty, their first child, was born on July 24, 2017. On January 15, 2019, Nya-Rose welcomed her younger sister, Sia Doherty. The sisters get along well with one another. Matt and their girls share a strong love connection. Matt is not a father. One of his greatest dreams is a son.
