Oher was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He was one of 12 children of Denise Oher. His mother was an alcoholic with a crack cocaine addiction, and his father, Michael Jerome Williams, was regularly incarcerated.
During his childhood, he received little attention or discipline. During his first nine years of schooling, he repeated first and second grades and attended eleven different schools.
At the age of seven, he was placed in foster care and alternated between living in several foster homes and periods of homelessness. When Oher was a senior in high school, his father was murdered in prison.

Despite a difficult life, his fortunes changed and he ended up in the NFL. The Ravens drafted him in the first round in the 2009 NFL draft. He played in the NFL for 8 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens for eight seasons.
Although Michael and Denise’s relationship was strained, his mother has spoken to various media outlets about her son over the years. When Michael won the Super Bowl with the Ravens in downtown Memphis in 2013, she was a special guest at a Super Bowl watch party.
Denise commended her son to the local station, saying she was proud of him and knew from the start that he would be good in sports.
