He is marginally wealthier than his fellow band founder, James Hetfield, thanks to his real estate and art investments. Lars is one of the world’s wealthiest drummers, and he was the first Dane elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Metallica was inducted in 2009.

Lars Ulrich paid $6 million buying a huge mansion in Tiburon, California, in 1993. Lars also owns 140 undeveloped acres of land in another section of Marin County where he has been planning to build a massive modern mansion for more than a decade.

He placed the property for sale in 2015 for $39 million after becoming tired of wrangling with local politicians. Lars Ulrich is a passionate art collector. He once had many pieces by Jean Michel Basquiat in his collection.

In 2002, he sold one of his Basquiats at auction for $5.5 million. Lars sold other paintings from his collection at the same auction, which was captured for the Metallica documentary “Some Kind of Monster,” for a total haul of more than $12 million. He sold a different Basquiat at auction in 2008 for $13.5 million.
