Sixto Diaz Rodriguez was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 10, 1942. Though his career began with minimal fanfare in the United States, he gained success in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Unbeknownst to him for decades, his music was hugely successful and influential in South Africa, where he is thought to have sold more records than Elvis Presley, as well as other southern African countries.

Rodriguez left music and bought a decrepit Detroit property at a government auction for $50 in 1976, where he still lived as of 2013. Rodriguez’s legacy would take off back home once he was included in the Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man.”
