Rodriguez most recently performed in the United States and Canada in 2018. In August 2018, he performed a tour that concluded with a hometown event at Detroit’s Garden Theatre.

Though his career began with minimal fanfare in the United States, he gained success in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Unbeknownst to him for decades, his music was hugely successful and influential in South Africa, where he is thought to have sold more records than Elvis Presley, as well as other southern African countries.

Rodriguez’s legacy would take off back home once he was included in the Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man.”
