Armstrong commenced his football playing career with the youth setup of Newcastle United in 2006.
After spending almost a decade with the Newcastle youth team, he proceeded to the club’s senior team in 2014, where he went on to have a four-year stint.

During his four years spell with Newcastle senior team, Armstrong had loan stints with Coventry City (2015–2016), Barnsley (2016–2017), Bolton Wanderers (2017), and Blackburn Rovers (2018).
After serving his loan period with Blackburn Rovers, Armstrong signed for the club permanently on 6 August 2018 on a four-year contract. Throughout stints with Rovers, he 160 appearances scoring 64 league cup goals.
Armstrong subsequently moved to Premier League side Southampton on a four-year deal on August 10, 2021.
