Fontenay began her work with the Miss France body as its general secretary in 1954, while the body was directed by Guy Rinaldo.

When Sylvie Tellier said in 2019 that she “would not oppose” transgender women competing in Miss France, Fontenay called the concept “against nature” and “dishonorable,” and said it would “dirty the title of Miss France.”

Fontenay’s son revealed on August 2, 2023, that she died in her sleep of cardiac arrest on the night of August 1, 2023, in her Saint-Cloud residence.
