Born August 27, 1952, Reubens kickstarted his career in the 1970s after joining the Los Angeles live comedy troupe the Groundlings as an improvisational comedian and stage actor.

In 1980, he launched “The Pee-wee Herman Show,” a stage production centered on a fictional character he had been developing for years. As Pee-wee became a cult figure, Reubens’ show ran for five sold-out months, and he landed a special at HBO. Reubens also committed to the character in his interviews and public appearances.

He worked with Tim Burton on “Pee-Big Wee’s Adventure,” the character’s feature film premiere in 1985, which was a critical and commercial success.

Three years later, Reubens returned for a follow-up picture, “Big Top Pee-wee,” directed by Randal Kleiser. From 1986 through 1990, the character appeared on CBS’ Saturday morning show “Pee-Playhouse.”

However, Reubens’ reputation as a beloved childhood hero was tainted when he was arrested in 1991 for indecent exposure at an adult movie theater in Sarasota, Fla.

Reubens stepped away from the Pee-wee character and began addressing the press as himself in the midst of the national sex scandal.

He wouldn’t play the legendary character again until 2010 when he brought back “The Pee-wee Herman Show” on Broadway. He also made several appearances, including on “WWE Raw” and in a pair of digital sketches for Funny or Die.

Reubens co-wrote and performed in Netflix’s “Pee-Big Wee’s Holiday,” a sequel to 1988’s “Big Top,” in 2016, which would be his final film performance before his death.

Reubens died on July 30, 2023.

Prior to his demise, Reubens was developing two Pee-wee Herman projects, one a black comedy titled “The Pee-wee Herman Story” and the other a family adventure film called “Pee-wee’s Playhouse: The Movie.”
