The infantile Pee-wee Herman character began as a theater performance and swiftly evolved to an HBO special in 1981.
Reubens joined the Los Angeles-based improvisational comedy troupe The Groundlings in the 1970s and stayed for six years, working alongside Bob McClurg, John Paragon, Susan Barnes, and Phil Hartman.
Hartman and Reubens became close friends, frequently creating and working on material together. Reubens composed sketches, honed his improv talents and co-created the Pee-wee Herman character with Hartman.
