Born Paul Rubenfeld on August 27, 1952, Reubens developed the iconic Pee-wee Herman character when he was a member of The Groundlings, a renowned Los Angeles improv group that has produced stars like Kristin Wiig, Lisa Kudrow, Maya Rudolph, and Kathy Griffin.
The Pee-wee Herman Show premiered at The Groundlings Theatre in 1981 and later moved to The Roxy on Sunset Strip before it landed an HBO broadcast, ultimately introducing the beloved character to a national audience.
Amid Reubens’s continued success with the character, he brought Pee-wee Herman to the big screen in 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, directed by Tim Burton.
Reubens went on to create, co-write and co-direct the series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” on CBS, where the series earned 22 Emmy Awards during its run from 1986 to 1991. Reubens was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards during his career, winning twice.
In 2010, he produced, co-wrote, and acted in a Los Angeles production of “The Pee-wee Herman Show.” The show then transferred to Broadway, where it debuted to tremendous acclaim at The Stephen Sondheim Theater.
Aside from his role as Pee-wee Herman, he appeared in a number of films and television shows, including:
- Gotham,
- What We Do In The Shadows,
- 30 Rock, and
- The Blues Brothers.

Regrettably, his effect as a role model for children was damaged after he was jailed for indecent exposure in Sarasota, Florida, in 1991. He was discovered masturbating while watching a movie in an adult movie theater, but he pleaded no contest to the offense and avoided a charge on his record, but he was compelled to conduct 75 hours of community service.

He was arrested again in 2002, over a decade later, after child pornography material was discovered in his home. He surrendered to the Los Angeles Police Department and was charged with misdemeanor possession. After pleading guilty to a lesser misdemeanor obscenity charge in 2004, the charges were withdrawn.
According to a Reubens representative, who received Reubens’ star on Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame on his behalf in 1988, the actor recently finished the first draft of his impending memoir.
The rep also said that Reubens had finished two additional Pee-wee movie scripts and was working on television projects such as a variety show and a western one called Fancypants.
