Rusi Cooper cause of death: What happened to Rusi Cooper? – Rustom Sorabji “Rusi” Cooper, an Indian first-class cricketer and lawyer died in South Mumbai on 31 July 2023 at the age of 100. Though a cause of death was not stated, he most likely died of old age-related ailments. He celebrated his 100th birthday on 14 December 2022.

Born on 14 December 1922 in Bombay, Bombay Presidency, British India, Cooper was educated in Bombay at Elphinstone High School and St Xavier’s High School.

Cooper made his first-class debut in the 1941–42 Bombay Pentangular Tournament, playing for the Parsees, and in the 1943–44 and 1944–45 seasons, he represented Bombay in the Ranji Trophy.

Cooper was chosen to play for the Rest of India against Western India States in February 1944 and he went in to bat at number eight where he made his maiden first-class century. He finished the season with 383 runs at an average of 76.60. He improved further in 1944–45, scoring 551 runs at an average of 91.83 with two centuries, one of them in the Ranji Trophy final against Holkar to help Bombay win the title.

In 1946, Cooper moved to England to study at the London School of Economics where he was signed by Middlesex and played one game in the 1949 County Champions
hip. The next season, he played more often but failed to make an impact, averaging just 19.63 for the county.

He improved further in 1944–45, scoring 551 runs at an average of 91.83 with two centuries, one of them in the Ranji Trophy final against Holkar to help Bombay win the title.

Cooper traveled to England to study at the London School of Economics in 1946. Middlesex signed him and he played one game in the 1949 County Championship.

He was a champion batter for Hornsey Cricket Club for several seasons, collecting 1,117 runs in 19 innings at an average of 139.62 in 1953 before moving to India with his English wife to practice law. Soon after his return to India, he had a major knee injury that ended his playing career. He worked as a maritime lawyer in India till he retired in his nineties.

He is the longest-lived first-class player in the history of Middlesex.
