He was awarded a high school All-American as a senior after three seasons of averaging 25, 27, and 26 points per game, and he was the first winner of the Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year award in 1960. Wilson earned All-State honors three years in a row.

After college, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals and went on to play for the Chicago Bulls, Seattle SuperSonics, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, and Buffalo Braves before retiring in 1971.
Wilson was named into the UC Hall of Fame in 1983, and the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
